Paul Poiret

Drapery!

When working with the heavy, medium and lightweight fabrics  I found myself become more fascinated by how the fabric fall over the body or from the body. I feel Paul Poiret has a similar fascination with drapery.

Knitted neck piece and samples

Samples of of hand made yarn and neck piece.

Liz (our tutor for knit) was very clear that she wanted us to experiment with making innovative yarns as well as focusing on colour. I had a total of 9 samples and my neck piece was made of a combination of a spongey recycled mat and multi-coloured yarns.
Metal sponges and coloured yarn.

Story board for knit.

Shredded cotton and then hand dyed.

Knit!!

Handknitting with Liz!

The day began with an introduction to an array of hand knit samples by previous students and their very colourful boards! I quite like the board below because it evokes such a joyful and exciting mood.

Liz mentioned all the terms and the lanuage involved with knit. The class took notes. It then continued by showing us the variety of swatches possible to make with precious students work. Examples included jersey yarn ( see below), shredded yarn and recycled yarn.

Our first swatch to make was called was the fancy knit which included extra pieces of fabric knotted onto the yarn to create a textured swatch.

I wanted to experiment with recycled yarns so I tried knitting with metal sponges by breaking them apart and stretching them out so that they were long and stringy like yarn.

We all had to take part in creating a multi-coloured stranded yarn from the huge selection of yarns in the knit room. We were asked to choose an image from our contextual notebook to use as an interesting colour story and to base our chosen coloured yarns from.
This was harder and more time consuming compared to what it seemed to be at first glance.

After lunch, we made felt yarns from a beautiful merino wool. I wanted to add colour to mine so I added a shredded green chiffon ribbon and small pieces of wool.

The process!

Paper Designs!

Paper Designs

We began the elective by selecting interesting shapes from our sketchbooks from the first sememster.
The idea was to pick ones that excited us the most. I had a range of black and whoite imagery in my sketchbook so I had plrnty to work from. I chose six at first and thenselected my final two (see image  below).

We then photocopied these shapes so that they were enlarged and traced the shapes onto brown paper, cut them out and then got pinning them onto the mannequin.
The purpose of this excercise was to create interesting shapes preferably in 3D. I really enjoyed this excercise..a great hands on approach to designing!

Below are some of the shapes I created from my chosen two flat shapes.

Covering the confined space

When the space becomes the canvas!

(The Attic) I covered a small section of the attic in black paper.

I covered myself in white powder so that when i moved (awkwardly) in the confined space, i was also drawing/marking my movement.

Experiencing everyday spaces through dance!

These videos were filmed in a shopping centre. I wanted to experiment with filming in ordinary, everyday places. I do think it causes the viewer to ask why I would dance in these places, therefore it becomes equally about the movement and space.

Got a few strange looks from security after this one!
